Transfer Speculation: Samuel Eto'o to Tottenham Hotspur (£24m)
Fresh from helping Boris Johnson secure an unlikely mayoral victory, now the Evening Standard (19.05.2008) is now trying to strengthen the Spurs team. Though to be honest it will probably be easier to get Boris into number ten that it will to cajole Spurs to the Premier League title - and significantly cheaper. After all paying for enough publicity to get a man elected as Prime Minister should be cheaper to finance than a Premier League title - or where have society's priorities gone?
Anyway The Standard is going with a £24m bid which is an outlandish sum considering Eto'o's form and fading personal motivation. But, apparently, £8 more than either of the Milanese teams can muster. If Spurs are considering spending this much money it is an indication that one of the other big money strikers would have to go - and given the long muttering campaign from Dimitar Berbatov's agent - he would seem the likely casualty.
A front two of Eto'o and Keane, with Bent as the back-up would form a beguiling strike force and if Downing or Bentley could be recruited to provide the bullets then the move to London could revitalise Eto'o. At his best Eto'o is the best striker in Europe - but he has struggled for form over the past two seasons, which is why he is for sale.
If Tottenham can recruit Eto'o and he hits top gear then he could be a real catalyst for a top four finish - and a sure-fire way to forget Berbatov.
