Everton- January Transfer Window 2009 Week 2

In common with a lot of teams, nothing much happened at Goodison during the first full week of the window but after speculation about Mikel Arteta and Joleon Lescott, Everton fans will be happy with that.

Last week Leroy Lita was the man reported to be a loan target. This week the speculation stepped up a class when the Toffees were linked with Javier Saviola of Real Madrid, currently a bench warmer with the Spanish giants.

The Argentine has also played for Barcelona and has 44 caps for his country, so this would be a big signing, even as a loan. Unfortunately, Everton may have trouble matching the striker's salary. Saviola is one of those names regularly linked with the Premiership; Kevin Keegan was said to want him at Newcastle before his early exit.

Closer to home and with a view to the future, Everton have been strongly linked with Wales under-19 defender James Wilson, currently at Bristol City. Reports suggest a £500,000 bid has been lodged for the player.

Manchester City's headlong rush to acquire new players meant that the name of midfielder Michael Johnson has been mentioned as a makeweight in several deals. While Everton don't want to do business on Arteta they may be interested in talking about a player who was impressive last year under Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Also in midfield, Reading's Stephen Hunt was named as a possible target in the News of the World. Hunt is the kind of player linked with many clubs- Sunderland tried very hard to get him last year but Reading held firm. With promotion in the offing, Steve Coppell is bound to fight hard to keep him again.
