Summer Window Watch- Wigan Athletic (1)
Wigan are really suffering for their successful 2008/09 campaign. The guts of the side that performed so well up to March has been ripped out, plus the manager who blended the team so successfully.
Emile Heskey, Wilson Palacios and Ryan Taylor went in January and now Luis Valencia has moved on too. Bids are expcted for Lee Cattermole and possibly Titus Bramble, plus Amir Zaki' s loan spell at the club is over.New boss Roberto Martinez has his hands full to make the team competitive again.
Steve Bruce did bring in Ben Watson and Charles N'Zogbia back in January but since then only Jordi Gomez has been added. The Spaniard played for Martinez at Swansea City and had experience with Espanyol in La Liga.
Gomez was a big hit in South Wales and offers some craft in midfield that Wigan were lacking last year. It just remains to be seen if he can handle the step up to the Premier League.
It promises to be an anxious few weeks for Latics fans facing the prospect of more players leaving the JJB Stadium and not much time to get replacements on board.
Martinez is in a similar position to Tony Adams at Portsmouth, taking over a successful club but with key players leaving. His advantage is that Wigan are a more stable club than Pompey and the departures aren't unexpected. Dave Whelan can be expected to provide a reasonable war chest and a few raids on the Spanish market are likely.
