Everton says that Liverpool FC is the most popular club*

Social Media (web 2.0 is so 2008) is starting to dominate the thoughts of our top football clubs, to the extent that the official Everton website is now urging the club's fans to sign up for Facebook and "Help the Blues become league champions and show the rest of the Premier League why Evertonians are the best supporters on the planet!".

Apparently this is possible by signing up to a Facebook fan page.

The 'league table' of Facebook fans on the Everton site shows the 'big four' in the top four places with Liverpool just heading off Manchester United as the most popular club on Planet Social Media. These two dwarf the other 18 clubs and represent 63% of the total Premier League Facebook fans.

Everton lie in eighth place below Spurs, Villa and Man City (one comment suggests that this is a result of bandwagon jumping) with 1/50th of the number of fans that their bitter rivals enjoy.

There is a light-hearted remark at the end concerning near-neighbours Bolton:

"[They] may have beaten Everton at the weekend but Bolton have nothing to celebrate in the Facebook standings. The Wanderers have only managed to recruit a total of 38 fans!"

Then again, Squarefootball would love as many fans on Facebook as Bolton Wanderers!
