Transfer Speculation: Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid) to Chelsea (£40m)
Chelsea are the footballing swan at the moment; all calm and serene on the surface - no we don't need to buy, no we're not worried about a transfer ban - but underneath a network of scouts and agents are paddling furiously to bring in three or four players to insulate against the probable loss of transfer rights from 2 February 2010 to the end of the 2010/11 season.
According to The Mirror the marquee signing denied the club in the summer (when only a common-or-garden £18m Russian was brought in) will be bought in January. With £40m to be spent on Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero which will smash Manchester City's British record signing mark made last summer.
The deal makes sense because Chelsea can be be somewhat one-dimensional in the big games, and although the return of Joe Cole will lessen this problem Sergio Aguero has the ability to make a similar impact that Fernando Torres did when he arrived from Atletico.
The Mirror suggests that Inter Milan bidding and a possible wage cut could stifle the deal - but Chelsea need to strengthen. An ageing squad, Drogba, Kalou, Essien and Mikel missing for the month of January and the inevitable blend of injuries and suspension make this kind of quality addition very important. this is the kind of deal that could see Chelsea brush off African absences with ease. Aguero and a short-term deal for an experienced defensive midfielder and Chelsea could stop paddling and start stocking up on silver polish.
