Manchester United transfer diary 2 January 2010 - 5 January 2010

Whether United have any money or not is exercising plenty of debate at the moment. The Glazers are fairly publically touting for banks that will offer them better interest rates than they could get at the height of the credit boom. As soon as the Bank of ELves and Pixies get in touch I'm sure it will be all right. In the meantime the squad that looked so potent last season suddenly looks a bit threadbare after a lot of injuries and now Vidic, unsettled by talk of a Spanish move, is acquiring mystery injuries.

Released from the shackles of being Cristiano Ronaldo's legman Wayne Rooney is having his best season for United. But The Daily Star believes that there is a plan in a Real Madrid bunker to purchase him for £60m so that once again he can do the tracking ack of two men from the left wing to make Ronaldo look even more of a star. The Daily Star go on to say that Madrid will pursue him 'in the same way they chased Cristiano Ronaldo last season' - which I guess means they will pursue him 'after reaching an agreement with United a year earlier after his oft professed childhood dream of a move to Madrid'. Can't see what can go wrong.

Speculation that Ruud van Nistelrooy will do a 'Paul Ince' and sign for Liverpool continues to swirl around without too much substance attached.

The Mail on Sunday lead on the worrying news that the Glazer family wants to raise £600m from banks, hopefully at lower interest rates than the crippling loans that their leveraged purchase of the club was based on. £600m, in a credit crunch, in the middle of a recession, with a bankrupt main sponsor, with your reputation? Nevertheless speculation never stops and The News of the World believes that United are going to spend £20m that someone has lent them on Porto's Brazilian striker Hulk

In other news, The Sunday Express reports that Carlo Ancelotti has pleaded with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich to stick with him as coach for the long haul and give him chance to build a dynasty to match Sir Alex Ferguson's at Manchester United. Does anyone give him a year?

Former United trialist and the one-time 'new Pele', Freddy Adu, is considering a move to Hull City after failing to make the grade at Portuguese side Belenenses according to the Daily Mirror. Best of luck.

The Times lead with some conjecture that Real Madrid were ready to make a move for Nemanja Vidic; Madrid are apparently encouraged that there is a problem between the player and manager because of how grumpily the manager answered questions on his warm-up injury. But as United had just lost Ferguson is apt to be grumpy about anything! United would probably demand £30m for Vidic if he is as unsettled as many suggest. The fall-out from the Leeds loss has not encouraged much talk about incoming players even if, according to The Daily Telegraph, Ferguson was planning to drop seven players (before the match was abandoned due to heavy snow). On Test Match Special, Man United fan Geoffrey Boycott revealed that he had written to United to suggest feng shui as a way for Michael Owen to get back to his best - Boycott had success in his recovery from cancer using feng shui.

*Will United buy anyone, can United afford to lose Rooney or Vidic? Let us know!
