Prediction Panel table: Spurs shake off Wigan defeat to close gap at top

Bookmark and Share

Football . . . it’s a funny old game. I was expecting some big scores from our pundits this week as there were four seemingly nailed on home wins. However, while Chelsea beat Stoke City, Liverpool disposed of West Brom and Manchester United gave West Ham a hiding, Champions League new boys Tottenham Hotspur spectacularly let the side down.

Harry Redknapp’s men were tipped to rack up a cricket score against lowly Wigan Athletic but Roberto Martinez’s men pulled off the mother of all shocks. Hugo Rodallega’s strike gave the visitors all three points and while the final whistle was greeted by a crescendo of boos, it wasn’t all bad news for the boys from the Lane as our Spurs pundit Dave Nash recorded a whopping 15 points to close the gap at the top of the table to just two.

Mr Nash correctly predicted four scores bang on and added three correct results on top. His success included Arsenal’s 2-1 win at Blackburn Rovers, Wolverhampton Wanderer’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle, Manchester United’s 3-0 win over West Ham United and Liverpool’s slender 1-0 win over the Baggies.

Last week’s top pundit, Wolves fan Chris Cox, had a poor week by his high standards correctly guessing just one score on the head and picking up eight in total.

Making a huge announcement following a spell injured on the sidelines is Middlesbrough fan Sue Gardener. The Squarefootball expert had three scores nailed on and correctly predicted five others to pull in 13 points.

However, it has not been a good week for our West Ham ‘expert’ Matthew Beeby. The Upton Park season-ticket holder is yet to watch his side win in the league this season and matches his beloved Hammers by currently propping up the table. And to make matters worse, he is the only pundit still waiting to correctly predict a score. It could be a long, hard season for the Hammers!

Other notable mentions include West Brom’s Andy Wakeman and Stoke City’s Phil Eccleston, who both tipped Chelsea to only beat the Potters by two goals, although Frank Lampard played a huge part in that with a dreadful penalty miss.

Also, I don’t like to brag but Birmingham fans should pay very close attention to my predictions as I have correctly predicted their past three results. It must be the Aberdeen connection between me and Big Eck! They play Liverpool next, I may go for a home win . . .

Wolves looked to have opened up an unassailable lead last week – eight points clear – but Spurs, Manchester United, Wigan Athletic, Blackpool, Newcastle and Middlesbrough have closed the gap. It’s certainly going to be interesting in the Premier League Prediction Panel.

Here are the results from Week Three.
