Wigan Athletic v Newcastle United: Pardew aims to rewrite history at the DW

Bookmark and Share

We’re only two days in to 2011 but here is a stat that will blow your mind. Newcastle United have never won on Wigan soil in league football. Astonishing isn’t it? Well Alan Pardew won’t get a better chance of rewriting history and winning over some of the doubters than today.

The former West Ham United and Southampton boss got his Newcastle career off to a flyer with a 3-1 home win over Liverpool last month but has unfortunately failed to build on that platform. Defeats by title chasers Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have left the Mags pointless over the festive period, but the Toon will fancy their chances of beating the struggling Latics this afternoon.

Roberto Martinez will enter the game full of confidence after watching his 10-men salvage a draw against the Arsenal in midweek and a victory here for Wigan would see them climb above Newcastle in the table.

The hosts haven’t lost at home since losing 2-0 to Manchester City in September while Newcastle haven’t won on their travels since shocking Arsenal at the Emirates almost two months ago. There has never been a goalless draw in this fixture and I can’t see one happening here, although the majority of the Panel do think the game will end all square.
