Predict the Premier League: Baggies boing boing to the top

Bookmark and Share

The past weekend in the Premier League proved to be a great one for Baggies fans around the world. After years of going down to their bogey side, Roy Hodgson finally guided the Albion to victory over Stoke City.

And to make matters even better for the Albion, Baggies fan Andy Wakeman scorched the opposition to top the weekly chart in the Predict the Premier League competition. Mr Wakeman was the only pundit to get into double figures last week as he correctly predicted an astonishing three scores bang on along with four correct results. His haul of 13 has seen his soar up the predictions table.

Mr Wakeman's return is made even more impressive by the fact that the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Stoke City all defied the majority of our pundits and cost them vital points. His maximum points came courtesy of Everton's 1-1 draw with Blackburn, West Brom's 2-1 win at Stoke and Sunderland's 2-0 victory over Swansea. He also correctly predicted that Fulham, QPR, Manchester City and Aston Villa would all be successful.

Norwich City's Sue Read, who saw her side clinch a point and their first clean sheet of the season against Chelsea, was our second highest scorer with nine.

It wasn't such a good week for Liverpool's Mark Williams, who failed to get his scores in on time, or Swansea's Jim White, who managed just one point. QPR's Arjun Swiminathan occupies the final place in the bottom three after recording just two points, along with Newcastle's Michael Stout, but sits in the drop zone on alphabetical reasons.

Eight pundits thought Norwich would be able to hold out against Chelsea but no-one predicted a goalless draw. A further nine pundits tipped Everton and Blackburn to share the spoils and all nine of them went for a 1-1 score.

Surprisingly nobody predicted Fulham to put five past Newcastle's Tim Krul, although eight pundits did go for a home win. The pundits had no problem with QPR v Wigan, as 18 went for a home win, but nobody saw the R's winning 3-1.

Only two pundits thought West Brom would beat Stoke City. We've already discovered that Baggies fan Andy Wakeman was rewarded for his faith in Hodgson's men, but so was West Ham expert Nigel Telfer, who went for a 1-0 away win.

Sunderland were huge favourites to beat Swansea at the Stadium of Light and Manchester United's Peter Lee, Stoke's Phil Eccleston and West Brom's Andy Wakeman picked up maximum points for predicting a 2-0 win.

Leicester City expert Chris Pettitt can take a bow. He was the only pundit to predict Villa would beat Wolves 3-2 at Molineux. A further 11 got the outcome correct. The same could not be said about Bolton and Liverpool. Only Arsenal's Don McMahon saw an upset on the cards at the Reebok.

Eighteen pundits had Manchester City's Mario Balotelli to thank for his last-minute penalty conversion against Spurs, and Everton's Chris Goodwin and Portsmouth expert Dan Taylor picked up maximum points with the 3-2 win.

Twelve pundits also predicted that Manchester United would be too strong for Arsenal, with 11 of them getting the 2-1 final score bang on.

Here is who scored what this week:
