Stoke City v Bolton Wanderers: Can Bolton do a Wigan and beat Stoke on the final day?

Bookmark and Share

Bolton Wanderers fans have experienced one miracle this season thanks to Fabrice Muamba's remarkable recovery from his on-pitch cardiac arrest. On Sunday, the travelling hoards of Bolton supporters will be hoping to witness another as the Wanderers aim to beat Stoke City and beat the drop.

Owen Coyle's men missed out on the chance of going into this weekend's finale level on points with fellow strugglers QPR. Djbril Cisse's last-gasp winner against the Potters last weekend, combined with late goals for West Brom against Bolton, delivered a hammer blow to Bolton's survival hopes, but the gaffer will be drumming it into his players that they must pick themselves up off the floor and give it their all at the Britannia.

Nobody likes playing at the Britannia Stadium. The fans are ferocious, the players are like rabid dogs seeking the ball and Tony Pulis just hates losing. He suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Bolton at the Reebok earlier this season when the Wanderers gained revenge for last year's FA Cup semi-final 5-0 drubbing, but will Pulis have the last laugh? On current form it doesn't look like it.

Stoke City have only one Premier League win to their name over their past 10 outings and that was against relegated Wolves at the Britannia in April. However, during that time they have drawn at home to Manchester City, Arsenal and Everton. The Potters remain a tough nut to crack and will want to give their fans something to shout about before they head off for the summer, but Wigan Athletic rolled up at the Brit on the final day of the season in the same position as Bolton and we all know what happened there. Can Bolton be this season's Wigan?

Owen Coyle's last league victory came against Aston Villa and the Midlands has proved to be a happy hunting ground for the Trotters this season, with Wolves also being shot down by Bolton on their travels. Bolton know they have to win and pray Manchester City wrap up the title in style against QPR to have any hope of staying up. And they have the players capable of getting the job done.

At the start of the season I thought former England and Spurs boss Terry Venables had lost the plot when he feared Bolton could be relegated this season. With 90 minutes left to go, I hope and pray that Bolton can do the business and prove El Tel wrong. Unfortunately the majority of our pundits is edging slightly in the home side's favour.
