Everton: Who could possibly replace Moyes at Goodison Park?
Last week all the tabloids went berserk about rumors that David Moyes was thinking of switching allegiances from Everton to Tottenham. They also said that Spurs had made David their number one target and were keen to have him as their manager right away.
Now, a week later Andre-Villas Boas and Laurent Blanc are said to be their number one targets and David Moyes is set for another season as the manager of the Toffees. But it is also common knowledge that David has one year left on his contract at Goodison and has not signed an extension yet. This all got me thinking. If the worst were to happen and David Moyes left his 10-year tenure at the club, who would replace him?
I have made a list of three managers that could potentially be good replacements for the current manager of Everton.
1. Ian Holloway - Ian is the current manager of Championship side Blackpool. Holloway is known for how his teams attack very fluidly but how they can simply not defend. This was shown when they gained promotion to the English Premier League and his team could not seem to hold on to a lead and rather just tried to outscore their opponents. This was a very brave approach and almost kept Blackpool in the top flight until the lost to Manchester United on the final day of the season. However maybe the reason why the Tangerines do not defend well is because of the defenders they have on the payroll, something that would be fixed at Everton. Could he be the answer to Everton not scoring enough goals?
2. Roberto Martinez - I am a huge fan of Roberto. Why? Simply because he sends his teams out to play beautiful football. The Latics play a fluid 4-3-3, with direct attacking football and try to dominate possession. This is something that Everton simply do not do. The Toffees rather put the defensive side of the game first rather than the attacking. However maybe this is a good thing, with the Toffees having a great defensive record over the past few seasons. But wouldn't it be nice, buying a ticket to a game and watching Everton dominate teams and score beautiful goals instead of playing a sometimes boring and dull game?
3. Harry Redknapp - If David Moyes does in fact move to Tottenham, a logical replacement at Goodison would be the man he is replacing at White Hart Lane. Harry’s sacking was a big shock throughout the football world because he did such a great job at the Lane. When he took over Tottenham they were near the bottom of the ladder, now they are a top four team who were unlucky not to qualify for the Champions League. If he is willing to work with a tiny transfer budget and move away from the south coast, Harry would be a great replacement for Moyes and could possibly guide Everton to another level, as he managed with Tottenham.
However if David Moyes does not go (which I don’t think he will) I will still be extremely happy, as who can do a better job with the team he has and the meagre little transfer budget he gets to fume at every transfer season?
Calling all Everton fans: If Moyes was to leave Goodison Park who would you like to see in his place? Would Holloway, Martinez or Redknapp excite you or would you look for a big name foreign coach like Hiddink or Ancelotti? How confident are you that Moyes will remain at Everton for the foreseeable future? Whatever your view, we'd love to hear from you.
