Everton: No anger as Cahill leaves for the MLS
It is therefore unsurprising to see such an outpouring of emotion and sentiment from Blues fans at the news of his imminent departure to New York Red Bulls. He is regularly referred to as a modern legend and rightly so; his failure to win trophies is more a reflection of the club’s inability to mix it financially with the top echelons of British football than of his own personal attributes.
What’s also noticeable, however, is that the one reaction in short supply is anger. Evertonians are watching a great player and personality exit the club for around £1m yet there are few recriminations being aimed at the board, no allegations of under-ambition or negligence from the naysayers in our fanbase.
That’s down largely to Cahill’s performances over the past 18 months, with his shyness in front of goal and inability to influence games marking a stark contrast to the majority of his Goodison career. His age and the length of time he’s spent at the club also lead most fans to acknowledge he has earned a big pay day move to a developing league.
As we watch Cahill depart with our best wishes, we must cling to the hope that his wages are well spent on new recruits alongside the likely figure of Steven Pienaar. The prospect of Everton locked in negotiations with MLS representatives sets thoughts racing to the possibility that a swap deal of sorts may also have been discussed.
Bringing in Landon Donovan as part of the new forward brigade would be the perfect tonic for wistful Blues as they bid a tearful adieu to a departing, battle weary hero. We can but dream.
