Starting up top, rumours have been swirling around about Robin van Persie moving up north to Manchester. But do Manchester United really need him? With the signing of Kagawa and the admission of the manager that he will play further forward, we assume the Japanese star will play behind Rooney. Thus, we already have a deadly duo in the final third. Surely, van Persie can do nothing but disrupt this partnership as well as frustrate both Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez immensely.
With the money United would be expected to cough up for the Dutch striker, he'd be expected to play as many games as possible. So I see Robin van Persie moving to the blue side of Manchester or to Turin to play for the Old Lady instead.
Speaking of Juventus, Sir Alex has reiterated his frustration towards Paul Pogba's disrespectful departure for Italy. On one side, the manager loses a highly talented individual who was on the brink of first team selection. On the other side, United lose the exact type of player they need in the midfield. Someone who can play deep but can switch from defence into attack. A midfield battler who would protect our back four and let Kagawa play in advanced positions.
Players such as Kevin Strootman, Yann M'vila and Joao Moutinho, who can all play in a defensive or central midfield position. Seeing someone like Lucas Moura being linked with Manchester United is exciting and it would be great, but if we could only choose one signing, I'd look elsewhere. Unless the contracts of both Nani and Welbeck can't be resolved, then the attacking options of Manchester United already look dangerous.
Going further back, the middle of defence looks fantastic, both in the present and for the future. It's on the flanks where United needs some reinforcing. Leighton Baines, currently with Everton, has been heavily linked all summer. With Patrice Evra losing pace, consistency and form, Baines would be a great addition to the squad while Fabio gains experience, on loan, playing behind Ji-Sung Park at Queens Park Rangers.
In addition, United have lost Ezekiel Fryers, 19, on a free transfer to Tottenham and also lost out on Jordi Abla. However, I don't think it's possible to beat Barcelona to the signing of a Catalan anyway.
But with his quality delivery, Leighton Baines would be excellent on the left flank, overlapping Ashley Young, and supplying the likes of Rooney with golden opportunities.
With a good stock of goalkeepers, Manchester United have a very competitive squad. I'd say Manchester United really only need one or two more signings to further strengthen the squad. I'd love to see a defensive midfielder come in, one with real quality. However, I wouldn't mind seeing Leighton Baines follow Wayne Rooney in switching his blue shirt for the red shirt of United, either. But which area of the United squad needs reinforcing the most? If you could choose just one player to sign, who would it be?
Whatever your view, we'd love to hear from you.
