Aston Villa v Everton: Can Villa put the brakes on Everton?

Villa v Everton

Everton got the new season off to a flyer on Monday night as they battered Manchester United at Goodison Park. Sir Alex Ferguson may not have been exactly complimentary on the Toffees’ performance, but if it wasn’t for the heroics of David de Gea, United could have lost by three of four.

This weekend David Moyes’s men travel to Aston Villa, desperately trying to rewrite the history books.

Aston Villa lost on the opening day of the season at West Ham United, but the Villains have a great record against the Toffees. You have to go back to March 2006 for the last time they lost to Everton in the league, courtesy of James McFadden, Leon Osman and a brace from Tim Cahill. Since then, Villa have won four and drawn six of the past 10 league meetings.

The visitors will head down the M6 full of confidence following their win over United. Fellaini and Jagielka were outstanding on Monday night and it looks as though the perennial slow starters are about to come out of the blocks quicker than Usain Bolt. With Jelavic up front and new boy Kevin Mirallas possibly making his Everton bow, the Toffees will be a sticky opponent for Lambert.

Villa fans have only seen their side win once at home since Bonfire Night, 2011, and even that was a last-gasp winner against Fulham in March. With Darren Bent back to fitness and Ron Vlaar looking like a rock at the back, it shouldn’t be long before they are celebrating again – but will it happen this weekend?

Panel Verdict

It doesn’t look like Villa will be getting their first win of the season here.
