Manchester United v Spurs: Can Bale or Defoe replace Lineker as a Spurs hero?

Manchester U v spurs

Old Trafford is affectionately known as the Theatre of Dreams but that's certainly not the case for the travelling Spurs fans. You have to go back to December 1989 for the last time a Spurs side won at Old Trafford. Could that change this evening?

Since losing on the opening day of the season to Everton, Manchester United have won all of their fixtures home and away, in England and in Europe. Apart from the Wigan game, they are not steamrolling teams but they are grinding out results and that's all that matters at this stage of the season.

United could end the day sitting pretty at the top of the table as Arsenal entertain Chelsea in the lunchtime kick off. Any slip up from the leaders at the Emirates and United will be ready to pounce, but regardless of what happens in the capital, United's main aim is to win.

However, standing in United's way is a Spurs side who have found their feet in recent weeks. Andre Villas-Boas has overcome the wobbles at the Lane and have won three domestic games on the trot. But if the former Chelsea boss was to lead Spurs to victory at Old Trafford and end the hoodoo that surrounds this fixture he would become more popular than an iPhone 5.

Spurs have not had much luck in this fixture down the years - Pedro Mendes anyone - but will this be the day Gary Lineker is finally replaced as the last Spurs player to score a winner at Old Trafford? Our pundits are not convinced.
