Newcastle United v Aston Villa: Can the Villains be heroes for Lambert?

Bookmark and Share

Newcastle v Villa

Aston Villa were the team that effectively relegated Newcastle United from the top flight in 2009. The Villains revelled in it as they watched Alan Shearer's men crash into the Championship. Since then the Mags have won promotion, rebuilt their squad and are now playing in Europe. Villa meanwhile have gone backwards and are now propping up the table. But who will be victorious this afternoon?

Aston Villa were given a real spanking following Newcastle's instant return to the Premier League. Man-of-the-moment Andy Carroll netted a hat-trick, Kevin Nolan grabbed two and even Joey Barton got in on the act in a 6-0 drubbing. Last season Newcastle came out on top again with Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse scoring in a 2-1 win. Can the Mags send the Villains packing again?

Historically St James' Park has not been a happy hunting ground for the Villa. They have only managed two wins in the north east since the Premier League was formed. Their last win came in 2005 when Bowyer and Dyer were sent off for fighting 10 minutes after Taylor had already been red carded. Villa ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.

Newcastle have only lost once at home during 2012, against Manchester City in May. In contrast, Villa have only won two league games during the calendar year. I think it's easy to predict where these points are going?
