Southampton v Manchester United: Can the Saints beat the Red Devils?

Bookmark and Share

Southampton v man U

There was a time when Southampton used to be a real thorn in Manchester United's side. In the mid-90s the Saints beat United three years on the trot at the Dell - including that 6-3 drubbing. But recently, as you would expect, United have shown their dominance, winning 10 of their past 11 meetings. But can Adkins's men take a trip down memory lane and beat the Red Devils?

Southampton showed against Manchester City that they are not here for the ride. They are here to compete and ultimately survive. Only the brilliance of Al Habsi in the Wigan goal last weekend thwarted them from scoring last week and they look like facing a similar obstacle this afternoon in the form of De Gea. The Spaniard has really grown into his position at Old Trafford and it will take something special to beat him.

United, without the injured Rooney, will be keen to record their first win on the road this season and Robin van Persie, Welbeck, Kagawa and Valencia will be expected to trouble the Saints' backline all game.

The Saints' last and only win over United at St Mary's came in 2003. The home side ran out 1-0 winners, but who scored? The answer will be revealed below.

Southampton are still searching for their first points of the season while United will be keen to move within three points of Chelea at the top. Who will emerge victorious? Unsurprisingly the majority is going for an away win.
