Arsenal: Would you be happy with the arrival of Wigan's James McCarthy?

Ever since Wigan won promotion to the Premier League there has always been a bit of heat between Arsene Wenger's men and those from the DW Stadium. The Gunners were the free flowing exponents of total football, while the Latics were lumped in with the likes of Wolves, Bolton and Stoke as teams who would rather win at all costs, and Wigan have cost Arsenal dear in huge games down the years. But could Wenger really be about to raid the Latics for their 22-year-old midfielder James McCarthy?

The Republic of Ireland international has been attracting the attention of David Moyes and Brendan Rodgers with a series of top displays for Wigan, but the Daily Mirror reports that it may be Arsenal who make the first move for the former Hamilton star. They claim Wenger may test Wigan chairman Dave Whelan's resolve with an £8 million bid.

James McCarthyBut is he really Arsenal class?

Well, McCarthy is young, has a lot of first-team experience and, like the rest of the Arsenal players, loves the football. He keeps care of the ball, nurturing and caressing it like it was a part of his family. He hardly ever plays a stray pass and, similar to Jack Wilshere, has the determination to win it back. So in that respect, he is an Arsenal-style player.

However, at this stage of the season, Arsenal fans are crying out for a big-name signing. They don't want potential any more, they want someone who is the finished article. Barcelona's David Villa has been mentioned and would definitely get the fans excited, as would Everton Marouanne Fellaini. Arsenal have also been linked with striker Adrian Lopez and Montpeiller captain Mapou Yanga-Mbwia.

McCarthy would provide great cover to the first team and would never let the side down, but you have to feel that that £8 million could be better spent elsewhere. Plus Wenger has been linked with more players than Big Brother's Imogen Thomas, but, unlike the Welsh stunner, Wenger hardly ever seals the deal.

Calling all Arsenal fans: Would you welcome McCarthy to the Emirates? Is he really the type of player Wenger needs right now? Who would you love to see arrive at the Emirates this January? Whatever your views, we'd love to hear from you.
