Why Arsenal should not sign M'Vila

It seems as if the M'Vila to Arsenal transfer rumours have not disappeared since the last window. For all intents and purposes it seems a logical signing. Known for his physicality and no-nonsense style, M'Vila is exactly the type of player needed in that defensive midfield position. However, following on from his Balotelli-esque Euro shenanigans, M'Vila has suffered a severe drop in form. These two reasons prove exactly why the Frenchman is not the man that Arsenal need.

It is no coincidence that M'Vila's price tag has dropped from around 20 to 30 million euros to somewhere between five and 10. Forgetting his behavioural problems, M'Vila's performances simply do not reflect those of last season. It is a possibility that this is due to his lack of motivation in playing for his current club Rennes (something that he keeps on reminding us of), yet is this a risk that is worth taking?

Yann-M-VilaI don't doubt Arsene Wenger's ability to bring out the midfielder's previous form that got everybody excited in the first place, but with some tough fixtures ahead, do we really have the time?

The Euro incident was not M'Vila's first demonstration of bad behaviour but was definitely the most spectacular. Forgetting the actual nightclub nonsense itself, the point is that Yann M'Vila isn't the classroom angel that Wenger usually opts to sign. It only takes one burst of anger and/stupidity to cost us three points. We've seen it in the past with players like Barton and Balotelli. You can't always train these things. And even for 10 million, it's still a lot of money to spend on a clear liability.

In reality I don't see Mr Wenger making a move for M'Vila. Much to the disbelief of many Arsenal fans, our manager is not stupid. Maybe had this been a year ago, the situation would have been different, but the midfield hard-man seems to have made Wenger's (and probably a few more managers) decision a little easier.

Wenger, already cautious with his money, would not risk it on a man faced with a serious international ban and a reputation for making being a bit of a bad boy.

So if this deal is not pulled off, what other options are there?

It is clear that since Song's departure we have missed a physical presence in that holding midfield position, and although Arteta has deputised well, it seems a waste of talent playing him so deep. Names of players have been spit-balled around as they always will be in transfer windows, yet the only one which I am both hopeful about and think has an actual possibility is Lucas Biglia, a talented defensive midfielder currently playing at Anderlecht.

Although admittedly I have not watched the Argentinian enough to make a complete judgement, from what I have seen and read, he seems the kind of player that both has the ability and will fit into Wenger's style of play being both strong and technically adept.

Calling all Arsenal fans: Do you agree with Josh? Do you think Wenger should steer clear of M'Vila? How much do you know about Biglia? Who would you like to see Wenger sign this month? Whatever your views, we'd love to hear from you.
