Robin van Persie or Luis Suarez - Who would you rather have in your team?
Liverpool's Luis Suarez took his goal tally for the season to 21 with his hat-trick against Wigan at the weekend. Those goals have moved him two ahead of Manchester United's main marksman Robin van Persie.
Now both men are fine players. They know where the goal is, have great feet and are born winners, but if you were the manager of a rival club and you had a rich Arab billionaire financing your title dream who gave you the choice of signing either Suarez or RVP, who would you choose and why?
This is the question I put to a few of our writers and loyal readers over the past few days. Here is what they think.
"For his all round game I think RVP would shade it for me! Suarez does know where the back of the net is but RVP has made the difference this season and has scored the more important goals and Arsenal are missing him to their cost this season. He also assists a lot as well. But admittedly Suarez has scored the most points in the fantasy football league although he has probably played more games as Fergie rotates his squad a lot more."
Dave Disciascio, Liverpool fan
"I might be guilty of a little favouritism, but I would have Suarez. The Liverpool talisman carried the burden of being the Reds only attacking outlet for much of the season; and has delivered match-winning moments consistently.
"Van Persie is brilliant, but he is surrounded with other brilliant stars. Suarez often has to go it alone, yet still produces. The Uruguayan may be guilty of making the headlines for the wrong reasons occasionally, but I will take the ugly with the sublime."
Mitch Waddon, West Ham fan and Squarefootball writer
"I think this is a really tough decision...it’s going to be another controversial Mitch Waddon decision but I’ll go Luis Suarez. I know he’s only had the one outstanding season so far but if he can do it consistently then I believe he is a better player than Robin Van Persie. Van Persie’s gone off the boil a little at United, whereas Luis keeps on going. Also, Luis still has the best years of his career to come, whereas RVP is going to be 30 at the start of next season."
"Van Persie for me every day of the week. I think he is much the better player and doesn't throw himself on the floor at the slightest contact."
"I would prefer Van the man as I think he more of an out and out goalscorer than Luis Suarez."
Hugh Larkin, Squarefootball writer
"Difficult, because they aren't like for like players. I'd lean to Van Persie as the more reliable finisher and he doesn't bring any baggage."
Do you agree? We'd love to hear from you.
