Could Arsenal's Giroud beat Messi and Ronaldo to win the Champions League golden boot?

Arsenal kick off their Champions League campaign tonight away at Marseille and the Gunners' main goal threat will come from their own Frenchman, Olivier Giroud.

The former Montpellier marksman has made a great start to the Premier League season, netting four in four games and five in six overall, but can Giroud finish the Champions League campaign as the most prolific striker in Europe?

Giroud 2Despite his fantastic Premier League start, Giroud is a whopping 80/1 to clinch the accolade at William Hill. I guess the Frenchman's odds are so huge because of the fact that the Gunners find themselves in the Group of Death with Marseille, Napoli and last season's beaten finalists Borussia Dortmund. There is also the fact that this is only the third season that Giroud has featured in European competition. But 80/1 is a great price.

Real Madrid's Ronaldo, who has just signed a new deal with the Spanish giants, is the man to beat after scoring his 21st hat-trick for the club against Galatasary. He is best priced at 2/1 at William Hill, closely followed by his arch-rival Lionel Messi of Barcelona on 10/3 at Coral.

It really is hard to see past the two best players in the world as they can score goals out of nothing and both Barca and Madrid only know one way of football . . . attack! Ronaldo of course ended last season as the Champions League top scorer with 12. He is already a quarter of the way to equalling that tally.

Bayern Munich's Mario Mandzukic is the bookies' third favourite at 14/1 at 88bet before we get the Premier League's first entrant, Manchester United's Robin van Persie. The Dutchman scored in the Red Devils' 4-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen and looks like carrying on where he left off last season for the English champions.

RVP's team-mate Wayne Rooney notched his 200th goal for United last night, but he is a 33/1 shot at Bet Victor.

Manchester United's rivals Man City picked up a comfortable 3-0 away win at Viktoria Plzen, with Sergio Aguero finding the back of the net and setting up Dzeko for the opener. The diminutive Argentinian is, like Rooney, at 33/1 at Bet Victor.

Champions League veteran Samuel Eto'o is now plying his trade for Chelsea and the Cameroon international is a generous 66/1 at William Hill. Eto'o may be the wrong side of 30 but he still knows where the goals are and will probably get more time than team-mate Fernando Torres. Torres meanwhile is 80/1, the same price as Arsenal's Giroud, former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas and Arsenal's summer target Higuain.

The most expensive player in the world, Real Madrid's Gareth Bale, is 50/1 at Paddy Power.
