City, United, Sunderland or West Ham - Who will win the Capital One Cup?

Bookmark and Share

Just two games separate Manchester City, Manchester United, Sunderland and West Ham from a final appearance at Wembley, but who will win this season's Capital One Cup?

Manchester City have strolled through to the last four. They gained revenge on Wigan for last season's shock FA Cup final win, thrashing the Latics 5-0 at the Etihad. They then beat Newcastle at St James' 2-0 but needed extra-time to do so, before seeing off a spirited Leicester City side in midweek, 3-1 at the King Power Stadium.

City's reward in the draw was a clash with Big Sam's West Ham. The Hammers are on cloud nine after recording their second victory at White Hart Lane this season. Even with a number of top stars rested, the Irons were just too strong for Tim Sherwood's men.

However, West Ham haven't made life easy for themselves in the cup. They just scrapped past Cheltenham at home in the second round before being made to fight right to the end against Cardiff in a five-goal thriller. Burnley were then dispatched at Turf Moor, 2-0, before the Hammers came from behind to triumph at the 03 Arena for a second time this season.

Arguably the side they wanted to miss in the semi-final draw was Manchester City, as they have been destroying all before them at the Etihad. Will Big Sam's side still be in the game after the first leg on January 7? Let's hope so.

Manchester City are the bookies' favourites for cup glory, best priced at 10/11, while the Hammers are the rank outsiders at 16/1.

Manchester United take on Sunderland in the other semi-final with the Premier League champions heading to Wearside for the first leg. David Moyes has had his fair share of problems at Old Trafford this season, but their form in the Capital One Cup has been exceptional. They have seen off Liverpool, Norwich City and Stoke City and are yet to concede a single goal. Not bad for a team supposedly in crisis.

Sunderland, who produced the shock of the quarter-finals by knocking out Chelsea, will no doubt have their eyes on survival, but the fans would love nothing more than silverware. Manager Gus Poyet is fully aware of the affect a cup final appearance would give everyone at the club so they will be going all out to beat United. The Black Cats can beat anyone on their day, but they will go into the semi-final as underdogs.

Four-time league cup winners United are 13/8 with the bookies, while Sunderland, who have never even appeared in a final of this competition, are 12/1.

The smart money is on Manchester City, but who do you think will win the Capital One Cup this season?
