Benteke joins Rosenthal, Torres and Van Vossen in the worst misses ever club

Bookmark and Share

Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke scored a sensational strike for the struggling Premier League side on Sunday in a rousing 4-1 home win over Norwich City.

He left Villa Park the hero as he made a goal out of nothing to beat Norwich keeper Jon Ruddy. The big Belgian controlled the ball on his chest, turned and smashed the ball into the back of the net before Ruddy could even react. It was a great goal from a great player.

Fast forward to today though and Benteke is certainly not the flavour of the month having missed an open goal against Ivory Coast from just 10 yards out. In fact he is the laughing stock of the world.

Benteke must have been thinking about how to celebrate scoring another goal for his country and taken his eye off the ball. There is simply no other expanation for such a ridiculous miss.

Some have already labelled it as the worst miss ever. That may be a bit harsh, especially when the likes of Ronnie Rosenthal, Fernando Torres and former Rangers striker Van Vossen have all committed the same crime down the years. Even the great goalscoring machine that is Cristiano Ronaldo has missed a sitter in his time. But what is the best miss of all time?

So who has missed the worst open goal ever? We'd love to hear from you.
